World Cup 2010 Recap!
So I normally don't do public entries (i normally don't do entries period) but with the end of the World Cup 2010 I'm compelled to write this.
My world cup this year was redeemed over the 2006 World Cup with Spain win over the karate kids.....I mean Netherlands. There was some beautiful football played and some really amazing and inspirational moments, but there was also a lot that left a bad aftertaste in my mouth. Let's break it down.
Good - The right team won.
Now I'm not saying this just because I'm a rabid Spain and Barca fan, but when all was said and done and the dust had settled, the better team came out on top. Spain played beautiful football throughout the tournament (let's forget about the loss to Switzerland) and despite the heart break of say the Germans, the Netherlands and insert African Nation here Spain deserved to win this and it's hard to be angry at the results.
Bad - African Clubs
Poor poor African nations. South Africa not reaching the round of 16, Ghana's heartbreaking loss to Uruguay and everything in between, Africa's world cup was not exactly the inaugural event they hoped it would be.

Well deserved folks
Now I'm not saying this just because I'm a rabid Spain and Barca fan, but when all was said and done and the dust had settled, the better team came out on top. Not the best outing for this guy
Despite what you may say or think about any African club and their skill level, there was something about having the World Cup in South Africa that made you root for them just a little bit. When you have a continent ravished by disease, poverty, instability...you name it, knowing this is their one ray of hope, you just want them to taste it, even if but for a moment. And unfortunately for the fruits of their labor could not have been anymore bittersweet.
Good - Team Play
Look at the teams that made it to the last rounds. Spain, Germany, Netherlands and Uruguay. These were teams that weren't overshadowed by one outstanding player with a massive sponsorship deal from adidas/nike (more on that later)
The guy on the right wouldn't have gotten as far without the other two guys
Stars rose out of their lineups with people like David Villa, Muller, Schneider and Forlan showing their skill both as individuals and as team players. But surrounding these heavy goal scorers was a team of well rounded players like Xavi and Iniesta, Schweinsteiger and Ozil, Bronckhorst and Bommel, and Suarez and Pereira. With the exception of Spain (who scored only 8 goals this world cup, which baffles me) the top contenders for the Golden Boot had the best supporting cast a club could want.
Bad - Superstars
Ronal-who? Someone mention someone named Kaka? Best player in the entire universe Lionel Messi? Never heard of em'. Wayne something........ I don't know.
Where were you?
And you?
Seriously? You too (fucking cry baby)
SERIOUSLY!!! WHERE THE FUCK WERE YOU?!?!?!
Despite all the hype given to the top players in the world and all the endorsement and marketing dollars flushed into them by Nike and Adidas, these guys showed barely a flicker of life. (Let's be real, that goal by Ronaldo against North Korea doesn't count) These gods of football touted as the best in the world were quickly brought down to the level of mere mortals. Let's forget about contributing, these guys barely even decided to show up (I'm taking about you Wayne Rooney, at least Messi took 30 cot damn shots)
The bad-er - The Bloody English
This is where I throw decency out the window. I really don't even know where to begin with this bunch of god damn hooligans
I don't want to look at you guys for a long time. NOW GO AWAY.
Now having fallen in love with London and the greater England area, I desperately wanted these guys to come through. BUT NO. For all the hype there was no skill to show for it. Hell for all the hype, there wasn't even any effort to show for it. For fuck's sake I could have sent a dodgeball team comprised of retarded monkey's and it would have been exponentially more exciting than the shit show display of "soccer" those bafoons put on. You guys are going to have to work hard if you want this guy back in your camp (and apparently the whole of your country)
Good for now, not so much in the long run - US Soccer
As much as everyone want's to say that this is the advent of US Soccer, let's be real....it's not.
I hope you enjoyed this moment, because the US is done caring about you for the next 3 or so years
Soccer enthusiasts such as myself don't enjoy being stuck here in the US where you're a minority, and that's not going to change for quite sometime. The America's somewhat "magical" run was good for a couple of days, but you're not going to get America interested unless you go all the way. And you're a bit of a ways off from standing a chance against other nations. Your performance made for some dramatic entertainment, but winning football? Not yet. You can't keep falling behind in the first 2 minutes and expect to get that far in the tournament.
Good but unfortunate - Japan and South Korea
Now I haven't been that supportive of Asian teams (especially South Korea purely because of my hatred for the casual South Korean soccer fan) But in all honesty these two teams were quite strong and it was a bit disappointing to see them go early on in the round of 16.
Oh Honda, if only you had made it a little bit farther you could have truly shined...despite having one of the worst hair styles ever
I must give credit where credit is due and both these teams had their moments of greatness. Especially Japan with it's surprisingly well executed set plays and organized and efficient play. And look...I'm sorry I kept bad mouthing South Korea. Their style of play isn't my cup of tea, but they showed the world some of their strengths during the Nigeria and Greece matches. But let's be realistic.... listening to a casual South Korean soccer fan is a bit like having a rod shoved through your eyeball.
Bad - Refs
Damn did they have a rough outing this world cup. Soccer is a sport that will never see widespread use of technology. As Americans, we've come to expect that every play can be reviewed (Did anyone see that Finals game where 5 million plays were reviewed in 2 minutes) And with that being said, a lot of the blame is going to fall on these guys, as it should sometimes. They were too many blown off sides calls, not enough cards, too many cards, hell even a goal that was a yard in the goal being disallowed
Well I don't know Bill...looks like he missed to me.....
The refereeing at this world cup truly did the sport a disservice. At least now Fifa will finally let go of it's arrogant ways and allow goal line technology so that the above atrocity can never happen again.
Good - Psychic Octopi
This one speaks for itself. Paul the Octopus was awesome. And I'm going to find myself a psychic Octopus to help predict my entire life.
This guys is the World Cup's real winner. Whether he makes it out alive because of angry German fans.....that's another story.
Looking back on this world cup, one word comes to mind to describe it: ok. While it had its beautiful and glorious moments, there were far too many things that stole the light away from those beautiful moments. Too many teams caught playing defense made for some boring football. Maybe with the advent of Spain as the champs will see more comprehensive, artistic and all around more entertaining play in the future. But in the end you can measure a world cup by the way it's final was played: choppy, dirty and simply just....ok.
Here's to you Brazil 2014. I look forward to watching Brazil step on everyone.

So many people my age have so much more to show for their lives than I do.
What the fuck have I done up to now?
